1st Class Fare Rebel Furious Over Payment; Mrs. Anne Melville, 23, jailed on Tuesday for refusing to pay a first class rail fare, was powerless to prevent her release against he will from Holloway prison. A spokesman for Mr. John Kyrle Hankinson, registrar of Brighton County Court, said last night: "Once she was in custody she had no legal power to sop anyone paying the debt to British Rail for her to secure her release. "After the bailliffs had driven her to Holloway were redeived a scribbled letter with postal orders to the amount of the debt, ~2, 6s, 6d. The Registrar decided to accept this as payment and the prison was informed. Mrs. Melville was released on Tuesday after serving only eight hours of her seven day sentence. She had been committed to prison after a ticket dispute with British Rail. Holder of a second class season ticket, she had refused to pay the full first class fare when she sat in the first class section of a Victoria Brighton train because all other seats were occupied. She also refused to comply wit ha county court order to pay the ~2, 6s. 6d outstanding. On her return to Brighton yesterday, travelling second class, Mrs. Melville said; "I am furious', "I wanted to stay in prison to make this protest".
