Max Von Pettenkofer died 75 years ago: 75 years ago, on February 10th 1901, the analytical chemist max Von Pettenkofer died in Munich by committing suicide. Pettenkofer, who worked as a professor in Munich since 1853, worked out the foundation of the modern hygienics, regarding the influence of environmental conditions. For the study of the determinants which are either advantageous or noxious for human health, he demanded the scientific research of the human environment (air, water, clothes etc.). His theory of epidemics bases on the consideration that not the bacillus, but rather the change of the level of ground water is relevant for the course of epidemies.
