Populist Theater: One of the most exciting places in an exciting city is this New York landmark, donated 118 years ago to house the city's first free public library. In 1965 Papp bought and renovated it. Then the persuasive producer got the city to buy it from him thus paying his mortgage and other costs - and lease it back to him for $ 1 a year. Behind the Renaissance facade hums and buzzes the work of putting on 40 or 50 plays a year.
