Description
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla., Oct. 11 -- ASSEMBLING THE PAYLOAD -- Workmen from the Space Technology Laboratories attach small vernier rockets to the base of the satellite, Pioneer, which was hurled into outer space early today to gather data from around the moon. The small rockets provide the final burst of speed to send the probe into outer space at a speed of approximately 25,000 miles per hour. At the top of the cylinder is the retro rocket which will be used to slow down the satellite as it approaches the moon.

Photo measures 8 x 10.25 inches.
