1949 Press Photo Premier Thakin Nu offers prayer to Buddha at Rangoon's ornate

Harassed by trouble which came to Burma with its independence in January, 1948, the nation's premier Thakin Nu, offers prayers to Buddha at Rangoon's ornate, 2,000-year old Shwedagon pagoda during lunar year end festival. He will not be present at ceremony April 8 at Insein, near Rangoon, when Karen tribesmen, who have been in rebellion for almost 10 weeks, surrender to government forces.
