1964 Press Photo Map illustrates Syncom 3 communications satellite's route

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Map illustrates how Syncom 3, communications satellite that will relay TV pictures of the October Olympics to North America and Europe, will reach a stationary position over the Pacific in 10 days if all plans succeed. The satellite, launched this morning at Cape Kennedy, Fla, will go first into an egg shapped route from 700 to 22,300 mile above the earth and will later be thrust into a circular orbit about 22,300 miles out and be guided into final position near the international date line where it will remain, apparently stationary.

Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches.

Photo is dated 08-19-1964.
