New From the Wheels Up. Not only is every major stamping in Volvo's 760 GLE new, but even the light alloy 10-spoke wheels were especially designed to compliment the razor edge styling of the body. The wedge-shaped front end, high tail, and low beltline are new for Volvo, but a great deal of traditional Volvo character is apparent throughout the car. At its press debut in Europe, several journalists referred to its appearance as "high tech," a description which Volvo engineers and stylists found very much to their liking. Jan Wilsgaard, Volvo's chief stylist who also designed the Volvo 120, 140 and 240 series, used both computers and wind tunnels to determine the low drag / high strength shape of the 760. While increasing the volume of both the passenger and luggage compartments, he achieved an overall reduction in drag of more than 11 percent.
