This is a detail from a comic strip by Richard Felton Dutcoult called Hogan's Alley, which featured the character at right, eventually known as the Yellow Kid. The strip, the earliest to appear in an American newspaper, was first published in Joseph Pulitzer's New York World on May 5, 1895.
