Jefferson County Health Department - When the sweethearts are counting down toward the "big day," they usually are on pins and needles -- literally. No one is exempt from the required blood test, not even the head of the Jefferson County Health Department, which administers the tests. Here, county health officer Dr. William Roper has a blood sample drawn at the Health Department Thursday by Nurse Janis Sutton. In the background is his fiancee, Dr. Mary Ann Jedziniak, who works in the Tumor Institute of the University of Alabama in Birmingham Medical Center. They met a few years ago at the University of Denver, where both were residents in pediatrics. Their "big day" will be January 14.
