1977 Press Photo Entrance to Jim Walter Resources coke plant, Alabama

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Rain and high winds moved striking steelworkers from their tent in front of the Jim Walter Resource coke plant to the safety of their cars Tuesday night. The strikers, off the job since June 30 when their contract expired, said things were so slow at the scene that "the police across the street are playing dominoes." Police and sheriff's deputies have patrolled the area since the Labor Day weekend after gunfire and a firebombing of a guardhouse at the plant. Workers still at the plant "were getting tense." one striker said, an effect of the violence combined with working 12-hour shifts since the strike. (Alabama) (Strikes)
