1945 Press Photo Gen. Hale greets Gen. Giles upon arrival in the Marianas

Army Air Forces, Pacific Headquarters -- Lieutenant General Barney M. Giles, new commander of all Army Air Forces in the Pacific, is met upon arriving in the Marianas by Major General William H. Hale. Gen. Giles is the new commander of Army Air Forces, Pacific Ocean Areas, and is deputy commander of the 20th Air Force. Under Lieut. Gen. Millard F. Harmon, whom Gen. Giles succeeds, Gen. Hale was deputy commander of operations for AAF POA. Gen. Harmon has been reported missing. At a press conference Gen. Giles told correspondents that the AAF was going to do to Japan what European Allied air power did to Germany -- with some extra bomb tonnage thrown in for good measure.
