1973 Press Photo Chimney sweep with his broom in Germany

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Legends aside, the chimney sweep - there are 10,000 of them in Germany - is more than just a romantic folklore figure. His job is of great practical importance. By law, every German chimney must be swept, because keeping chimneys clean and in good repair not only lessens the danger of fire but also helps to keep the air cleaner. There's no doubt that it's dirty work - but there is the pleasant aura of good luck and the pat on the cheek as compensation. Germany, industry, occupations
