1938 Press Photo John L Lewis Speaks at United Mine Workers Convention in D.C.

John L. Lewis, Chairman of the Committee for Industrial Organization seen as he made a dramatic speech at the United Mine Workers Convention at the Rialto Theater in Washington. Lewis proposed that the entire CIO join with the AF of L and receive their charters. As an alternative, he invited the entire A.F. of L. to join the C.I.O. on the same date and all would receive chapters in the C.I.O. Meanwhile, the 2,000 delegates cheered.
