Description
This sequence made with a 70 millimeter tracking camera at Williams Point, Fla, shows the breakup of the first Centaur research rocket in flight May 8 after a launch from Cape Canaveral. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration, releasing the photographs today, said the first malfunction might have been caused when a weather shied broke away at 20,000 feet. The Centaur stage then broke and burned as the Atlas booster continued to drive the rocket forward.

Photo is dated 1962.

Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches.
