1953 Press Photo Fred Saigh sentenced to jail for tax evasion and sports heads

Fred Saigh, owner of the St. Louis Cardinals (right) is shown reading a statement in which he said he is removing himself immediately from all active participation in baseball and club matters and will sell his stock in the Cardinals as soon as possible. The action took place at a meeting with Warren Giles (left) president of the National League and baseball commissioner Ford Frick (center) in Frick's office today. Saigh was sentenced to 15 months in prison and fined $15,000 for tax evasion.
