Description
From his first day in Congress seventeen years ago, Newt Gingrich has set out to build a Republican majority and become Speaker of the House. One full year into his controversial term, Frontline presents an investigative biography of the outspoken Speaker, "the Long March of Newt Gingrich," airing Tuesday. Correspondent Peter Boyer takes an inside look at how Gingrich led the GOP to become the majority party, his political success, and the controversies surrounding his confrontational tactics and alleged ethics violations. The portrait is drawn through interviews with Gingrich's family, friends, teachers, top aides, consultants, and political allies and foes. From his childhood obsession with Western movies and John Wayne (above left, as a child), to his academic underpinnings (left, as a graduate at Tulane University), to his current role a Speaker (above), the film chronicles this complex leader.
