Writer/Executive Producer Mary Kaplan is familiar with the Washington political scene, having served in the Jimmy Carter administration as chief speechwriter for Vice President Walter Mondale. He subsequently became deputy campaign manager for Mondale, during his bid for the Presidency. Mr. Kaplan was also a columnist for The Washington Star. He became an executive at The Walt Disney Studios before launching his career as a writer/producer. his other screenplay credits include the comedy "Noises Off." In Hollywood Pictures' new comedy "The Distinguished Gentleman," Eddie Murphy stars as Thomas Jefferson Johnson, a big-time con artist who scams his name onto the ballot and, miraculously, gets elected to the U.S. Congress. Lane Smith, Joe Don Baker, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Victoria Rowell, Grant Shaud, Kevin McCarthy and Charles Dutton also star. A Hollywood Pictures presentation, in association with Touchwood Pacific Partners I, "The Distinguished Gentleman" is directed by Jonathan Lynn, from a screenplay written by Marty Kaplan. Leonard Goldberg and Michael Peyser serve as producers. Marty Kaplan is executive producer. Buena Vista Pictures distributes.
