1963 Press Photo Missile Blasts Off

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Pershing artillery missile blasts off on start of successful 190-mile flight after it was bounced on its carrier vehicle over rugged terrain to simulate battlefield conditions. This Pershing was the first fired by an all Army crew, which had to use an age-old battlefield tool sandbag before it could launch. Sandbag was placed under one side of carrier vehicle when concrete benchmark on which it rested was out of line.
Photo measures 6.5 x 8.25 in.
