Illinois State Rep. Leland Rayson.Leland H. Rayson, 79, a fiercely independent, progressive politician who represented the southwest suburbs in the Illinois House in the late 1960s. During his 12-year tenure in the Illinois House, Mr. Rayson fought to legalize certain abortions and promoted health care for migrant workers, pro-environmental measures and reducing the voting age in Illinois to 18. Mr. Rayson graduated from Pittsford High School in Upstate New York. Though he began college before World War II, he enlisted in the Navy and was made a junior officer in the South Pacific, where his service included landing troops during the Battle of Okinawa.
