MARIANNA TSCHERKASSKY OF THE AMERICAN BALLET THEATER.Tcherkassky, Marianna (b Glen Cove, NY, 28 Oct. 1952). US dancer. She studied with her mother Lillian Oka, at the Washington School of Ballet with Mary Day and Edward Caton, and at the School of American Ballet in New York from 1967. She danced with the André Eglevsky Ballet in 1968 before joining American Ballet Theatre in 1970. She was promoted to principal in 1976. She created roles in Feld's Eccentrique (1971), Tudor's The Leaves are Fading (1975), Tharp's Push Comes to Shove (1976), Baryshnikov's The Nutcracker (Clara, 1976), Choo-San Goh's Configurations (1981), Vernon's In a Country Garden (1984), and Bujones's Grand pas romantique (1985). She was also acclaimed for her performances in the 19th-century repertoire. In 1997, following her retirement from ABT, she became ballet mistress at Pittsburgh Ballet Theater.
