Charles Poletti, former Governor of New York, testifying before Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said ratification of the Italian treaty was "not favorable to the interest of the U.S., in view of the new policy toward Greece and Turkey." Committee chairman Vandenberg took issue with Poletti when he said the Italian people thought America had "let them down" in the treaty.
