St. Angelo Castle and Bridge , Rome, Italy. St. Angelo Castle in Rome was originally built by the Emperor Hadrian in AD 136 as a mausoleum. In the Middle Ages it was used as a fortress and later as a prison. Its Misericordia Bell, which can still be seen, always tolled for executions. Thewpronze angel, crowning the summit was in memory of an apparition said to have been witnessed at the end of the plague of AD 590. The three central arches of the bridge are those built by liadrian; they were restored in 1892 and the outer ones rebuilt. In 1688 the bridge was decorated with 10 angels after drawings by Uernini.
