Robert G. Ford, the first Negro teacher hired by the Portland School district to be the first Negro mandatory retired from it. At 64, Ford is near the compulsory retirement age of 65 and the end of a 26 yr cancer in Portland public schools. And he's bowing out in style as this year's Teacher of the Year, an honor bestowed upon him by the Portland Association of Teachers. The 1971-72 school term will be his last as an English teacher at Roosevelt High School.
