1978 Press Photo Worker checks a copy of People's Daily in China - nox44448

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
The newspaper was the People's Daily, China's principal newspaper and the main organ of the country's Communist Party. The six-page publication, which has a nationwide circulation of 6.1 million, is described as a newspaper and looks like a newspaper, but it is not a newspaper as we know it. Instead, it is an educational tool designed "to publish Marx-Lenin-Mao-Tse-tung thought, to publish the goals of our party and to reflect the life of our people." said Chin Chuan, the paper's deputy editor-in-chief. The newspaper's 1,200 employees work in a building on quiet Wang Fu Ching Street in Peking. American journalists are accustomed to working in noisy quarters where reporters and editors frequently shout across large newsrooms at each other, but outside the composing and press rooms, everything was eerily silent and dark as we walked through the halls past small offices to a meeting with three People's Daily executives.

Photo is dated 1978.

Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches.
