1967 Press Photo Surveyor 3's photo of Surveyor 2's scoop of lunar soil on moon

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
A clump of lunar soil, picked up by Surveyor 2's little scoop, lies on the spacecraft's foot-pad to which it was moved to permit close examination against he pad's white background. In foreground is a color calibration chart used in color study of the material. Surveyor 3's television camera photographed the material through four separate filters, clear, red, green and blue, and sent the pictures to earth. This photo, made at 6:57 a.m. EST Wednesday, was made through the red filter.

Photo is dated 1967.

Photo measures 8 x 8 inches.
