1969 Press Photo Terraced sided crater of Mars photographed by Mariner 6

A huge crater with terraced sides was photographed by Mariner 6 in its near encounter with Mars in this picture returned Thursday night the spacecraft to Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. The area shown is about 20 miles in width. The picture was made when the spacecraft was about 2,500 miles away. The north pole is to the right.

Photo is dated 1969.
