On display at the Science Museum, London, is a replica of a 14th century clock purchased by the Smithsonian Institute, Washington, D.C. Besides marking the hours it gives the motions of the sun and the moon and the five planets known when the original, destroyed in 1809 in the Spanish Peninsular wars, was designed and built between 1348 and 1364 by John Dondi, a versatile Italian savant. Constructed from drawings and a Latin description not translated until the 1930's, the replica is the result of three years work by three Londoners, H. Alan Lloyd, Geoffrey Buggins and Peter Haward. A further claim to its fame is that it is the first full astronomical clock produced in Britain for 250 years.

Photo is dated 1961.

Photo measures 8 x 11 inches.
