1984 Press Photo Patrick Peeter, Peeter's Belgian Pastry, Shows Choices of Goods

Description
Like the other Europeans interviewed, van Beuningen is overwhelmed by the outgoing, friendly personalities of most Americans. "In Holland the people are not that friendly," he says. "And there are so many things here you can do that we could never do there, like eating out. Who could eat oysters and shrimp and crawfish in Holland? And have you ever heard of a store being open seven days a week over there? Over here, if you work hard, you can make it. Over there, even if you work 365 days a year, it's like you're on a leash. You just cant go any higher." Apart from family and friends, there is very little that expatriate Europeans miss, they say, except their own specialty foodstuffs. But even that has been taken care of in Covington. Kay Kern's Gourmet Market stocks everything from fixings for Indonesian rijstaffels - a series of different dishes popular with the Dutch - to teas for the English, exotic Chinese spices and herbs, authentic Mexican foods, pates, wines and champagnes. And there is an authentic Belgian pastry shop in the area. Owned and operated by 30-year-old Patrick Peeters and his young wife, Peeters Belgian Pastry is located in a quaint European-styled cottage across from one of the more expensive residential area i Mandeville.
