1959 Press Photo American Airlines Electra Plane Crash in New York

Evidence of tragedy, a twisted plane seat, a woman's stocking, and a hat lie on shore after being pulled from water by salvage workers, while in the distance a helicopter scans area of American Airlines plane crash in search of bodies. Officials say it now appears that 65 persons died in the crash of the turbo-prop "Electra." Only nine survivors have been found and one of those died later in hospital.
