Caceres, on the road from Madrid to Lisbon in the province of Extremadura, is Spain's most famous stork town. Flocks of the distinctively long-legged white birds make their home here, nesting untidily on the tilled roofs of ancient stone buildings, wheeling continuously across the predominantly clear blue skies. The town is not one of the best known tourist spots, but it has its own special attraction and its own fame. For the visitor who doesn't care about the medieval houses, towers and churches; varied styles of architecture, fine stonework and tile work, and the meandering alleyways in the town's center, there's still something to gape at: storks, storks everywhere.
