Calvary And The Crucifixion - Today's Interpretation No Cross, But A Firing Squad....
Young people of St. Catherine's Church, New Cross, are rehearsing their Easter Passion Play, in their own idiom.
Christ wears sports coat and jeans, and the Roman soldiery are wearing khaki, white belts, peaked caps and carry out the execution as a firing squad.
Youth club members staging the representation claim that if Christ lived today he would be liquidated for his uncompromising views in this 20th century way.
They claim a contemporary setting must have contemporary method of execution. Thirty members of the club are participating, all in modern dress. Pilate will wear officers uniform and the high priest will be dressed as a bishop. Audience will be notified that the Bishop of the Diocese, Dr. Mervyn Stockwood, should not be mistaken for the bishop in the play and any ambiguity is unintentional.
How Christ would have died had he lived today: A re-enactment for master of the master story with Christ played by an anonymous merchant navy officer and members of the New Cross Youth Club....
