1960 Press Photo tests for automobiles employing telemetry

Space tests for automobiles employing telemetry, the science used to send back information from space satellites, has been announced by the electronics research department of a British aircraft company. Its developers, who have named it Dydas, claim for it that it will cut months or even years from the time spent in testing, thus making for cheaper, safer and quieter cars. Top: Electronics Engineer Alan Potton, watched by Electronics Assistant Elsie Cawsley-Cooper, adjusts the transmitting equipment. It will send back readings from 24 different points on the car while it is in motion. Bottom: Electronics Assistant Dave Richardson adjusts the receiving equipment. In addition to permanently recording the radiohead results from the travelling test car, meters and a oscilloscope give immediate reports on such factors as strain, pressure, vibration and temperature.
