For more than an hour workmates tried to free him - with the aid of a giant crane. Doctors on the spot conferred - then told Mr. Graham: \"We must amputate\". Three nurses, two doctors and surgeon, Mr. Ivor Frew went down into the trench, and is 15 minutes they amputated his left leg up to the knee so that he could be lifted clear.
