1968 Press Photo Frances Bright on a fire engine

Seeing Her First Fire Engine - AT 75: Miss Frances Bright, aged 75, lives in what is affectionately known as "cowboy country" - the wilds of Exmoor, North Devon, and yesterday, saw a fire engine for the first time in her life. She was staying with her relative, Mr. Doug Chappell, the "father" of Teignmouth, Devon, Council, where she mentioned to him that she had never seen a fire engine. "It would make a lovely Christmas present. It';s something I've heard people talk about but never seen, and I've always wanted to see One" she said. With the help of council chairman Arthur Bladon,Mr.Chappell arranged surprise with the Teignmouth Fire Brigade for Miss Bright. Yesterday, Miss Bright, from Roborough Mills, Winkleigh, Devon, received her present. Not onlydid she see a fire engine, she got on it, stood on the running boards, tinkered with the pumps ad ladders and went for a brief excursion along the promenade. Said Miss Bright "It's been the most wonedreful morning of my life." "It's a wonderful Christmas present. I am surprised that with the work they do, fire engines should be so bright and clean."
