Description
Rome: 1 Sept 1966 - Pope Paul VI made a pilgrimage to Monte Fumone south of Rome to pay homage to the only Pope who never abdicated. Pope Paul VI visited today the shrine maintained in the castle to Saint Pepet Celestine, who was imprisoned and died in the castle on 19th of May 1296 after abdicating as Pope Celestine V. Pope Paul VI made the pilgrimage from his summer residence at Castel Gandolfo. Monte Fumone is about 50 miles south of Rome on the edge of the Abruzzi hills where Saint Peter Celestine was Benedictine hermit monk before he was elected in 1294. He's never happy in the papacy and eager to return to the simple life of a pious hermit, forced through his abdication in the face of opposition from many members of the Sacred College of Cardinals. His successor, Pope Boniface VIII imprisoned him in the castle to keep him from falling into the hands of a faction that might have exploited him to create a schism in the church.
