On high Commissioner for refugees: Paul Hartling, upon the nomination by the Secretary-General , was elected on 8 December by the UN General Assembly to succeed Sadrugdin Aga Khan as UN High Commissioner for Refugees for a five-year period beginning 1 January 1978. ~r. Hartling was Minister fir Foreign Affairs of Denmark from 1968 to 1971, and Prime Minister from 1973 to 1975. Mr. Hartling was born in Copenhagen in 1914 and graduated with a degree in Divinity in 1939. During the early years if his career Mr. Hartling was active in the service of the Church from 1941 to 1950, including teaching at a Congregational Seminary, 1941-4947. he conducted courses at the University of Copenhagen from 1939 to 1942, and was Principal of Zahle's Teachers Training College from 1950 to 1968. Mr. Hartling has been the Chairman of the National Organisation of the Danish Liberal Party since 1965. he has been a member of Parliament from 1957 to 1960 and again since 1964. He has been a member of the Nordic Council from 1964 to 1968, and again since 1971, having been President from 1966 to 1968 and in 1977. Mr. Hartling is the author of several books and publications. He is married and has four children.
