Tokyo Police Check Car Exhausts: Tokyo traffic policemen wearing gets masks are carrying out daily check of automobile exhausts in an attempt to control air pollution. On their first check with measuring instruments plugged into the exhaust pipes and coupled to gauges, 40 percent emitted exhaust gas with higher CO levels than the legal limit of 5.5 per cent, when the engine is idling. Owners of cars that issued high levels of CO were ordered to tune up their engines immediately,. The newly formed "Police Pollution Squads" will set-up check points on streets known for traffic congestion. If any car emitting carbon monoxide between 5.5 and 7 per cent is checked, an "out of order" sticker is pasted on the windshield, and must be repaired without delay, the owner must report to the police for a re-check when the repair has been made, failure to observe the order is a fine of more than $30, and will be temporarily deprived of their driving license.
