Description
A zoological world-sensation: Two female gorilla-twins were born on 3rd May at 10.45 am in the Zoological Garden in Frankfurt. Before that, it was not known that a gorilla was able to have twins. The news about this sensation was immediately spread all over the world, and during the next few hours and days telegrams and congratulations came from most European countries, Northern America and even Australia. The mother of the two black babies is the female gorilla Makula, who was brought to Frankfurt from Spanish - Angola, when she was a tiny baby weighing 4 lbs. Mrs. Hildegard Grzimek took care of the anthropoid ape-baby, and the gorilla spent her first 4 1/2 years in the private household of the zoo-directors. Therefore, Makula is very used to people and do not know how to associate with gorilla-babies. The baby must be cared for and reared with the greatest care. A gorilla-birth in a zoo is anyway a very sensational event. The gorilla twins in Frankfurt are very interesting for scientists, as they probably come from the same egg. Photo shows the first snaps of the gorilla-babies.

Photo measures 8.25 x 6 inches.

Photo is dated 05-05-1967.
