The Darkening Vale of Belvoir: National Coal Board plans, to sink mines into 90 square miles of agricultural land in Conversation areas in Leicestershire has brough about strong opposition from a Duke right down to an Egg Producer.
As the N.C.B put forward their claim that they must bridge an energy gap, which will came about by the 1990's, the real argument led by The Duke of Rutland is whether it is necessary to ruin such valuable land and a Blue Stilton Cheese Industry, which has given fame to the area for generations.
The Duke has already threatened to lie in front of any Bulldozers which may come onto his land and is right behind the Campaign to Protect the Vale of Belvoir. With The Duke's Castle being in the heart of the Vale, it is perfect Battlement on which to hold out against the N.C.B.
Local M.P. Micheal Latham, along with the Vale Protection Group, have made an appeal to the Government in the hope to force them into setting up a full planning commission. Until such time a statement is made by the Government on the matter, a black clould will leave the Vale darker in Belvoir.
