Dockyard Riggers "Splice The Mainbrace" As The Re-Rigging Of The "Victory" Nears Completion.
The re-rigging of Nelson's "Victory" of Portsmouth has been almost completed, and sixteen civilian riggers were invited by the Captain of the Dockyard, Captain J.A.MARRACK R.N. to unofficially "splice the mainbrace" today. The work of replacing the old sisal ropes of the VICTORY with Italian hemp, which will last a considerable of years, was started last October. The major part, involving the main mast, for mast, bowsprit and jibboom, has new been finished. To replace the rigging of the VICTORY 34 miles of hemp, 3-tons of spun yarn, 300 yards of old canvas and 224 gallons of tar are needed.
Photo Shows: Three cheers for the C.O. of the "Victory" - Lieut.- Commander V.H.Bracher, R.N. by the riggers dressed in the uniforms of Nelsons's time, after the ceremony.
