1955 Press Photo Ships wait along west side of Suez Canal - hpw08880

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
The west bank of the Suez Canal provides a parking curb for this line of stalled ships, the result of the New Year's Eve ship-bridge collision that blocked the strategic waterway for four days. The ships, halted on their southward journey about 50 miles south of Port Said, were waiting for workmen to clear away the jam that resulted when the freighter World Peace veered into the western terminus of the nearby El Ferdan bridge. Traffic was resumed Tuesday.

Photo is dated 1955.

Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches.
