Description
Construction was begun at Harrisburg in 1851. By 1860 it had...Scene at a depot when railroads were the newest way to travel. Notice the small engines and large smokestacks, headlights, and cowcatchers. Note, too, the dress of the people, their interest in he train and the horse drawn vehicles. Do you know any type of passenger train that could visit the communities of Lovelady, Latexo and Grapeland during the first week in November to help us celebrate our centennial? All of the towns were established with the coming of the railroad--Mrs. I.W., Latexo. Because Missouri Pacific, the company that owns railroad rights in your area, no longer has the authority to operate or transport a passenger car, it can't be done. Cars are available through the courtesy of the National Railroad Historical Society, but the problem is in finding an engine to pull them. Even if an engine were available, the tracks between Houston and Latexo are heavily traveled by freight trains. Scheduling a "funsy" run like this one might be impossible for that reason as well.
