1993 Press Photo Energy Devices on Western Monarch, Oil Exploration Ship, Texas

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Strings of underwater acoustic energy devices line the cable deck of the Western Monarch, the world's newest and most sophisticated oil exploration ship. Built for the Western Geophysical division of Litton's Houston-based Western Atlas oilfield services subsidiary in Texas, the 303-foot vessel represents an investment of $35 million. Western Monarch will acquire seismic data through two, three or four hydrophone-studded, fiber-optic towed in a parallel array that can extend for miles behind the ship and detect the sound waves reflected back from rock strata far beneath the sea floor.

Photo is dated 1993.
