Description
The Coast Guard had to leave them - but came back. Because duty comes first at sea, a U.S. Coast Guard combat cutter had to leave these survivors of a torpedoed British merchant ship standing in freezing water in a swamped boat to engage a Nazi submarine before returning to rescue them, if they were still there. Completing its military mission in a hurry, the Coast Guard ship was able to return in time to successfully carry out its mercy mission. US Coast Guard.

Photo is dated 1946.

Photo measures 10 x 8.25 inches.
