Army Sp. 3/c William Girard holds a press conference in Camp Whittington, Japan, with Brig. Gen. Charles L. Decker, left, United States Army assistant advocate general who has flown to Japan "to protect his interests," and Maj. Stanley F. Levin, right, whom the Army first assigned to the case. Girard is scheduled to stand trial in a Japanese court for causing the death of a Japanese woman at a United States Army firing range. Girard, at the press conference, denied that the Army has been "pressuring" him to accept the Japanese trial.
