James H. Doolittle set a cross-continent speed record in 1922. James H. Doolittle. Jimmy Doolittle. Flyer's highspots - Jimmy Doolittle, who is the hero of the one-hour Purex Special, "The World of Jimmy Doolittle", is seen at two highpoints of his career. Winner of the Distinguished Service Cross (top) as the first flyer to cross the continent in a single day in 1922, Doolittle is seen in his early biplane. (Bottom) Jimmy is congratulated by President Roosevelt during World War II following his celebrated Tokyo Raid. Seen left to right are General Henry H. Arnold, F. D. R., Mrs. Doolittle, Gen.
