1962 Press Photo Astronaut Scott Carpenter with Marlene Walker, Christmas Seals

Astronaut Scott Carpenter, whose mother was a victim of tuberculosis, receives Houston's first Christmas Seals of the season from Miss Marlene Walker,5230 Newkirk, a Christmas Seal volunteer worker. Carpenter said he sold Christmas Seals in grade school and that because of research provided through Christmas Seals, his mother was able to live a normal and happy life for many years. She died recently of pneumonia complicated by tuberculosis.
