1969 Press Photo SS Manhattan chief steward Leo Oliveira in supply room on ship

Every photo in our collection is an original vintage print from a newspaper or news service archive, not a digital image. Please see our FAQ for more information.

Description
Above are Larry Roth, third assistant engineer, in the engine room, and Leo Oliveira, chief steward, in the supply room. At left, during a press briefing, is Mrs. Helen Bentley, chairman designate of the Federal Maritime Commission. The only woman aboard the Manhattan during the historic voyage, she used a four-letter word while calling in a news story over the ship's radio. This made Humble officials nervous and they forbade any more voice-to-voice communications between news media and their home offices. S. S. Manhattan.

Photo is dated 1969.

Photo measures 6 x 7.5 inches.
