Description
Caption: School first day scenes. Mrs. MITCHELL in her classroom: Control is the first order of the day. That's one of the things the children have to learn about Mrs. Mitchell and third grade. There are other things, too,as she told them the first day: "You're very, very big now," Mrs. Mitchell says. "You're third grade and you're in the platoon. You have to walk around the building on your own, nobody will be walking with you. So you've gotten very, very big." Not one of the 32 children, 14 boys and 18 girls, in Section I probably knew what the word "platoon" meant. But it sounded grown-up and made them feel important.
