Caption: Two students cross a teacher picket line at Detroit's George Elementary School during the first day of a strike by the city's 12,000 teachers. The two were among only 11.848 of the district's 213,000 students who showed up for class in spite of the strike. The main issue in the strike is cost-of-living protection, teacher union officials said. Detroit is the largest of 25 Michigan districts with teacher strikes.
